An external preparation can be used to treat burns, relieve muscle pain and joint injuries. It can both relieve pain and stimulate healing of the connective tissues. It has been revered as treatment in injuries involving the nerves. It also possesses anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, and to specifically kill Staphylococcus Aureus, a highly resistant strain of bacteria that causes severe and serious infections. This herbs action is specific to the nervous system and calming tension, so it could be used in tonics for stress for both humans and animals.

St. John's Wort grows in USDA Zones 3 to 8, and prefers partial or full sun, with average height of 2 feet. The one inch-yellow flowers have tiny black dots on the petal margins; the leaves are covered with the same tiny oil glands and this is where the medicine lies. Rub a blossom on your hand, and if it leaves a red-purple streak it is ready to gather.

Contraindications: Although side effects are rare, some animals might develop a photosensitve rash if out for long hours in the sunlight, especially those animals with lots of bare skin. Large quantities would have be injested for this occur, but just be aware of this side effect, If a rash does occur, discontinue use and get the animal out of direct sunlight exposure.
