Pavo cristatus
Origin from India

pea feather

Beautiful rich jewel-tone colors have long been admired in peafowl - thus one of the main reasons people own them. Their legendary beauty was so great that they were known as a treasure in biblical times, right into the 14th century where they were only owned by the rich and powerful. The peafowl is still held sacred by some groups in India where, as it is the official national bird, it is state protected. Peafowl are hardy birds to most climates, and they eat seeds, insects, fruits and grasses just like other avian species. Both genders have an loud, eerie cry and also a slightly amusing honking call when stressed. They are very calm, regal birds and on the ground, the peacocks love to strut their stuff, displaying their magnificent tails. At night, they love to roost up high. The peacocks are suprisingly strong and swift, even with their long tails, which can grow up to six feet long. Although lacking the long tails like the peacocks, the peahens show flashes of color and have their own beautiful markings.

I am still new at breeding peafowl, and this year I do have some eggs in the incubator due to hatch in June if all goes well. I am leaving the rest up to the peahens to hatch (or not!). So, the availability of peachicks is uncertain at this time. I advise you to send an inquiry if you are seriously interested, and I will see if we can accomodate your order.
