Nettles, also known as Stinging Nettle, is the archetypal alterative herb, an herb that nourishes health by strengthening and balancing metabolic functions. Its diuretic properties help rid the body of wastes, and are a mild astringent to tighten and tone internal tissues. Nettle contains a host of nutrients. It is especially high in chlorophyll and protein, having more protein than any other North American plant. It also boasts a high iron content to help build blood and tissue. I would include nettle in any energizing and general health tonic. Nettles grows in USDA Zones 4 to 9, and prefers partial, but can also grow in full sun. Nettle is a perennial, and grows to a mature height of 3-4 feet. Nettle will spread by rhizomes if it is planted in rich, loamy fertile soil, with good moisture. The plant is covered with stinging hairs, which are neutralized by cooking or drying. It is also an excellent compost activator. Contraindications: Touching this plant can be painful! Thorough drying or cooking
will neutrilize the painful constituents. Animals who are predisposed to plant allergies may
be sensitive to nettle. Moonlight Mile Herb Farm Copyright © 2010 Susan Burek |
