Motherwort is an especially valuable medicine for the circulatory system, and acts as a normalizing force to lower blood pressure and calm the mind and spirit, and to relax. Motherwort is a safe calmative to help ease stress and nervous exhaustion, and promote restful sleep. Motherwort would be ideal in a tonic for stress. Traditionally it is also used to strengthen the heart and regulate menstruation.

Motherwort grows in USDA Zones 3 to 6, and prefers partial to full sun. It is a hardy perennial, usually the first clumps of green in the spring. Although it has pretty maple-leaf like shaped leaves, it can grow to a height of 4 feet. The tops flower on a single stalk with pretty small light pink flower bells. The plant is named after the tail of a lion which shape it sometimes resembles.

Contraindications: Care should be taken when feeding to pregnant animals.
