Indian Runner Ducks - Anas platyrhynchos
Origin from India

indian runner ducks

The "bowling pin" duck as this duck is aptly nicknamed, is not your usual duck, by looks or demeanor. And the "runner" part is apt as well, since they do not fly or waddle but the position of its legs allow it to run like the dickens! They are easily excitable and can be prone to panic if cornered, but otherwise find them an engaging flock ranging the yard as a close-knit family. Like all ducks, they do need some water provided, whether that be a big bucket, or small wading pool, ditch or pond. They can be found rolling around in shallow puddles after a good rain storm! Runners come in many colors: black, white, chocolate, cumberland blue, fawn, mallard and trout. They are easy to care for and they are good plant foragers, so they eat plenty of native herbs and grasses, along with the usual bugs - especially mosquitoes! They are easily trained, do not fight among themselves, do not wander far when ranging, and new additions to the flock are easily integrated. Their breed are prolific egg layers, but the females are not readily able to brood, since they are losing that capability though domestication. But we do have some hens who go broody each year - one hen has hatched out a duckling on her own and raised the young drake successfully! She proved to be a very protective and good mother. The happy quacking and "whispering" sounds they make are delightful to listen to, and their expressive faces have that runner "grin" which is contagious. Baby animals can make your heart melt, and duckings are no exception! click here at your own risk
